Thriving as an expat in a diverse workplace

Hello dear friend,

I hope you are well and enjoying your day to day activities. Have you been choosing them intentionally?

We have been reflecting on at Black History Month across all  our platforms; feel free to join the conversation on Instagram, Youtube and also gain access to our Email newsletter

In today’s post, we will look at how you can create your own path, despite the challenges of immigration.  We will explore some strategies that can contribute to a wholesome existence.

Living abroad can be an exciting and enriching experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges and unique experiences. This is especially true for people with darker skin tones who are often faced with various systemic and cultural barriers in various settings.

What are some of the challenges?

Moving to a new country brings with it a host of new experiences and adjustments. To thrive, it is important to make an effort to understand and adapt to the local culture while still maintaining your own identity.

This could involve learning the local language, familiarizing yourself with the customs, and embracing new experiences. Lots of reading and talking to people, go for it, it’s an adventure!

One delightful way to adapt to a new environment is through its food. Sampling the local cuisine can be a fascinating adventure in itself. Seek out local markets, street vendors, and family-owned restaurants to savor authentic dishes, go on food tours, walking tours organized by locals.

By doing so, you not only treat your taste buds to a world of flavors but also engage with the local culture on an intuitive level.

Food is often a bridge that connects people, and sharing meals with locals can lead to rich cultural exchanges and lasting friendships.

Different countries have different racial dynamics, and it is crucial to be aware of these dynamics to successfully navigate them. Understand that the experiences of being black abroad can vary greatly depending on the country and its history.

Educate yourself about the local racial climate and any potential challenges you might face. Be prepared to confront stereotypes and prejudices with confidence and resilience.

Creating a strong support network is vital for personal growth and well-being while abroad. Seek out local and expatriate communities, social groups, and professional networks where you can connect with like-minded individuals.

These networks can provide valuable support, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration. If they don’t exist, start one.

One of my colleagues started one that now has 9000+ people within it. It started one day.

Another way to thrive is by harnessing educational and professional opportunities. Be proactive in seeking out scholarships, internships, and job placements that can help you develop and showcase your skills.

This will not only enhance your personal growth but also establish a strong foundation for a successful career while living abroad.

Volunteer at charities and events, put your hand up in meetings to share your views, your experiences are valid too.

Spending time abroad does not mean losing touch with your cultural roots. It is important to actively maintain connections with your home country and cultural community.

This could involve attending cultural events, celebrating traditions, or staying connected through social media and online communities. These connections will provide a sense of belonging and strengthen your cultural identity.

Speak your language, listen to your music, dress the way you want to and feel comfortable to dress. You belong here, act like it.

Find something that gives you confidence and hold on to it, it could be something you are really good at, get better at it and keep leveraging on your skills and gifts to get to the top of where you want to be.

Your dreams are valid my friend.

Thriving as a black person abroad requires a combination of adaptation, resilience, and perseverance. By adapting to the new environment, navigating racial dynamics, building a support network, pursuing educational and professional opportunities, and maintaining cultural connectiion.

You can achieve a successful and fulfilling life while living abroad. You won’t be the first or last, make it fun while you are in it.

Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come your way, and remember that your unique experiences and perspectives can be valuable assets in creating positive change both abroad and at home.

Stay wholesome

Stay authentic

Be yourself and keep getting better at it.

Live wholeheartedly,

Amaka
